The Pastor's Life

November 18, 2008

In order to communicate more effectively, your newsletter will be published every week! If you have any ideas for articles, or would like to write an article, please call Jo Ann at the church office (262-3425). We want you to have an opportunity to share with your church family.

    Next Sunday’s Scripture & Message

Knowing that you will want to read the lectionary prior to next Sunday’s service, please read the following:

Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24; Psalm 100;

Ephesians 1:15-23; *Matthew 25:31-46

Sermon Title: Who Are the Least?”

*scripture used in the sermon

Growing in Giving, Growing in Grace...

No - the lead above is not an error or misstatement of this year’s stewardship theme. Rather, it represents the synergistic and circular nature of Christian living and giving.

If you truly believe that it is through the grace of God that you actually have whatever time, talents and treasures you enjoy, then returning a portion of them to Him is not really giving up anything, but is simply acknowledging that He has provided all that you have in the first place.

It is a reminder to us that His gift of grace has provided to us much more than we deserve.

Please prayerfully consider increasing your commitment of giving to Broadway Christian Church this year and also thank God that we don’t get what we deserve.

Dan Shisler

The Church Growth Ministry has scheduled a Thanksgiving covered dish dinner for November 23rd following worship.

The Church Growth Ministry will provide the meat (chicken and ham), drinks, and bread, with the side dishes, salads and desserts being provided by the congregation.  If your last name begins with A-F, please bring salads; if your last name begins with G-O, please bring pie (cherry, apple, pecan, or pumpkin pie with whipped topping); if your last name begins with P-Y, please bring a side dish.

We hope you plan on attending this potluck dinner – it’s always fun to sit down with friends and share a meal and a few laughs.

Outreach Ministry News

The Outreach Ministry has decided to prepare Thanksgiving Food Baskets for 10 local families this year. Outreach will purchase the turkeys, pies, and whipped topping (we can’t have pumpkin pie without whipped topping!), and the throw away roasting pan.

Outreach is inviting the congregation to donate the following items: if your last name begins with A-F, please bring stuffing and broth & relish dish items; if your last name begins with G-O, please bring canned corn, green beans and cranberry sauce; if your last name begins with P-Y, please bring 5 or 10 pound potatoes. Please bring your food for the Thanksgiving baskets Sunday morning the 23rd.

The Outreach Ministry will prepare and deliver the baskets the afternoon of November 23rd with the help of the youth group. If anyone else would like to help in any way, please call Jo Ann in the church office (262-3425).

Search Committee Update

Of the sixteen steps the search committee has to take, we have formed a committee, named a chairperson, contacted the regional office, met with the assistant regional minister, hired an interim minister, and completed a congregational self study.  The congregational profile form is being sent to the regional office.

Tasks still to be accomplished are:  get a list of ministers, screen the list to choose potential candidates, interview until a choice is reached, have a congregational vote on our choice, issue a letter of calling or contract, notify the regional office, notify other candidates that the position is filled and schedule an installation service.    This all takes time so please be patient and pray for us.

 Reflective Prayer

Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve:
To give, and not to count the cost,
To fight, and not to heed the wounds,
To toil, and not to seek for rest,
To labor, and not to ask for any reward,
Save that of knowing that we do your will.

—Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Memory Verse

Matthew 6:19-24

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!  No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one andi love the other, or he will be devoted to the one andi despise the other. You cannot serve both God andi Money.”

SNOW/INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

When Wichita schools are closed due to bad weather, scheduled events at the church are cancelled.  If Wichita schools are open and the weather creates hazardous driving conditions, the committee chair or event leader will decide where or not to proceed with the scheduled event and communicate that decision in advance to attendees as soon as possible.

This policy will be added to the already established policy for the church office on snow days and obviously does not apply to Sunday activities.
